The Volscan Profiler is a benchtop laser-based scanner that measures solid products’ volume, density and dimensional profiles.
Why choose a Volscan Profiler
Measure more than volume
The rapid 3D digitization of products allows for the automatic calculation of key physical properties such as volume, density, and dimensions. Additional measurements, including surface area, height, width, length, and weight, can also be captured. These results can be manipulated mathematically for immediate analysis or stored for future retrieval in a variety of data formats.

Fast and accurate
In just 22 seconds, manufacturers can obtain precise data about their products, enabling real-time control and monitoring of production processes.
More Versatile and Safer than other methods
Historically, volume measurements of baked goods were taken using seed displacement, but this method is now regarded as outdated, inaccurate, and labor-intensive. Issues such as seed loss, clumping due to moisture, and the need for constant calibration can all compromise the efficiency and accuracy of the measurements. In contrast, Volscan provides 3D digitization of soft, thin, or brittle products, a task that is difficult to achieve with seed displacement.
Mercury displacement methods, which are toxic and often illegal in many regions, have been replaced by the Volscan Profiler, which delivers the same accuracy without environmental risks.
X-ray measurement techniques are costly and pose safety concerns, requiring specialized training. In contrast, Volscan Profiler uses an eye-safe laser, making it the safest option for density analysis.
Traditional fluid displacement methods are unsuitable for porous materials, but the Volscan Profiler uses non-contact laser technology, which is unaffected by sample porosity.
Gas displacement techniques tend to be limited to small sample sizes or come with a high price tag. Volscan Profiler, however, offers the largest measurement range in its category.
Features and Benefits

Fully rotatable test files
The scanned data can be viewed in both 2D and 3D formats, allowing for easy comparison with previous measurements. The 2D sectional view also enables additional manual measurements at chosen intervals. The 3D view is rotatable in all directions, offering flexibility for comparison and presentation purposes.

Adjustable Rotation Speed
For delicate or heavy samples, such as soft products like sandwich cakes, slower rotation speeds can be used to prevent distortion or fragmentation, ensuring accurate results. Faster speeds provide quicker scans but may affect the integrity of certain products.
Stacking products for faster testing
To streamline testing, we offer the ability to scan multiple products at once. Afterward, each product’s individual data can be analyzed. This is particularly useful when testing multiple items, such as bread rolls, allowing for an average measurement of volume and weight, while also generating separate scan files for each item.

Easy verification
Accuracy is key, and the Volscan Profiler allows for easy verification using a Calibration and Verification Rod. This ensures that measurements match the manufacturer’s specified values, giving you confidence in your results.
Data and Results
Data is collected via a built-in spreadsheet for statistical analysis, but can also be exported to Excel if preferred. Additionally, a report template is available for the automatic insertion of test data, or you can manually edit reports using full report editing tools. Images and data can also be copied into other applications.
Barcode Scanner compatibility
The device supports barcode scanning via USB, enabling quick entry of product information and reducing the chance of user error.
Use your Volscan Profiler to:
- Assess the impact of ingredient quality, formulation changes, or processing variables on the dimensions of the final product.
- Establish baseline dimensional properties for your “gold standard” product to ensure consistent quality control.
- Monitor dimensional changes during storage or transportation.
- Validate product claims.
- Compare your products against competitors.
- Provide objective, quantifiable results that can be archived for future reference and comparison with historical data.
How it works
The product is positioned either by mounting or using a spearing method, depending on the type of product being tested. The operator enters relevant parameters, such as sample ID and test date, into the software. The product is then weighed automatically, and an eye-safe laser scans its contours vertically at selectable intervals. Each scan captures 400 data points, creating a detailed 3D profile. This process is rapid, with results available in seconds or minutes, depending on the interval selected (ranging from 0.05mm to 50mm) and the desired level of precision. The temperature of the testing chamber is also monitored automatically.
A comprehensive Help File is available to guide users through test setup, calculations, and optimal test settings for specific products.
